We totally met the legendary Little Richard — in Vicksburg. Here's the story: Mark Doyle, a Vicksburg native, plays guitar in Little Richard's band. Well, Mark's mother died, and the entire band came for the funeral. The repast was at Burger Village, which is two doors down from the H.C. Porter Gallery. When Lauchlin went to meet Olivia at the gallery about an hour before we planned to stroll down the hill to the Vicksburg Farmers' Market, we peeked outside to see all the people. A very nice man stopped us and said, "You know, Little Richard is in town." Lauchlin had already heard the scoop at the newspaper, but we didn't think it was appropriate to bust in the funeral. But, Billy (part of Little Richard's personal staff) introduced us to the band, including the king of "Tutti Fruity" himself. He looked beautiful! We both shook his hand, and he very quietly said, "Hi."
It's just one of those weird things — you never know what can happen in Vicksburg.
