Steppin' Out

Lauchlin had her first face-to-face meeting with potential sponsors for a permanent collection of Backyards & Beyond paintings today. In order to make a lasting impression, she donned this power suit complete with new heels.

This is our other personal assistant, Clementine.

Don't You Wish You Had One Too?

Soon to be regarded as one of the best decisions we've ever made, (Okay, it was Lauchlin's idea.) we hired a personal assistant last Sunday to help us get our house back in order. Jimmy and Karen's active adolescent daughter/stepdaughter took us up on a half serious offer to mow our lawn for very little compensation.

She not only ended up staying to help disassemble the old furniture, she cooked her own lunch, dusted, swept and mopped, and, yes, helped arrange the new furniture. Olivia's faith in the younger generation was temporarily restored. We don't know how we could have done it with out her!

If the Shoe Fits...

If you have been to our house, you know that Olivia owns a few pairs of cute shoes.
In her real life, however, she spends a lot of time during the day standing and walking. Take note. She purchased on Saturday, for the first time, a pair of sensible shoes:

Okay, well, and these:

A Little Graphic

Lauchlin has been trying her hand at graphic design in her new job. It's not something they covered in Southern Studies, but she's mastered the trial and error method of learning. So far, her "work" has been featured in Oxford American...

and Jackson Free Press...

In case you don't have access to either publication, you can see one of the ads below. (shameless plug, we know!) It's an online ad for the OA web site. The original file is easier to read.

Furniture, Furniture, Everywhere!

We were offered a great deal on some mildly used furniture — one we couldn't pass up. For $100, we scored a dining room table, eight matching chairs, a china cabinet, two bed frames and a whole set of bedroom furniture to match one room. At the moment, our house is covered in furniture that clearly doesn't belong in certain rooms. Tonight we're going to have to figure out how to move the old table to a storage area large enough. Needless to say, it will take awhile to get things sorted, but we're totally psyched about getting back on the home improvement wagon to find places for everything to go.
With our new dining room furniture, we can have people for dinner and actually have enough places for them to sit. And, the Waterford crystal Lauchlin's aunt has been haphazardly collecting for her since Lauchlin was born, finally has a home here. We're very excited!
Fancy dinner party coming soon...
The cats have been amused by this furniture takeover, which is why the tablecloth is all askew.
The living room all of a sudden has extra storage!
This bedroom already needed some real work. Now we have to figure out how to fit a full bedroom set in it!

But Who's Counting?

Olivia's parents will be celebrating their tourmaline anniversary today. Congratulations on 38 great years!

There's Something About Mary.

Mary Dixon, our long lost friend, recently moved from Florida back home to Mississippi. Since we haven't seen her in years (except for a random meeting on Washington Street a couple of years ago during Riverfest), she came for a visit and sat on our porch last Saturday night, the same night when our DVR cut off the last of the Ole Miss game (Did we win or WHAT!?!)
While in Florida, she apparently honed some mad skills. She and Lauchlin played guitar together back in 1997, but she has far surpassed songs from Camp Bratton Green and the simple Indigo Girls set list. Here she is rocking out the Mary J. Blige version of U2's "One." We were very impressed! Excuse the dark, unedited video.

We decided we need to start a band with Mary. Well, Olivia wasn't kidding. Lauchlin decided she's probably better suited as the agent!

We just need to get these girls some gigs! Now that Mary lives in Jackson, we plan to hang out with a guitar at hand so she can be our party trick. Apparently, her friends in Florida did the same thing.

Mojo was just happy the guitar case came out of hiding for a night.

Season 7

Lauchlin taught Lance Bass everything he knows when they went to the ninth grade homecoming dance together. We can't wait to tune in to Dancing with the Stars two weeks from now!

Traveling Presents

Our friends, Hallie and James (pictured above in the center), were married nearly two years ago. Well, somehow, we have managed to not see them since they tied the knot. We had two wedding presents for them that we took to Oxford, but never managed to get to the reception. So, for almost two years, we have held on to these presents — taken them places where we thought we might see them, placed them among holiday gifts in hopes we'll get to have a holiday visit — but we still have the presents!
Because of the time that has passed, the presents are now marked with claw prints. Clementine, the youngest cat, afterall, was still a baby when the Collins were wed. The gifts, we noticed, also have a few dead pine needles tucked between the wrapping paper from sitting under not one, but two Christmas trees.
Not only have we broken etiquette by not delivering the presents in the one-year time allotted, we have tackily begun traveling with the presents. Most recently, we took the gifts to Biloxi, where they enjoyed a nice overnight stay at the Beau Rivage. As a parting gift, the bell boy stuck some lovely "Beau Rivage" stickers on each package (as he did with the rest of our "luggage"). It's almost like a passport stamp for these sad presents.
With the threat of Gustav lurking while we were on the Coast, we didn't get to visit with Hallie and James as we had originally planned, so the gifts came back to Vicksburg, where they have moved from the porch to the living room and, I'm sure, in three months will make their annual visit under the tree.
Below, you can see that the gifts made their first long distance trip to Biloxi. Who knows where they'll travel next!

So Much Trouble in the World

Why did these lasagna noodle makers suggest using a 9" x 13'' pan when the noodles are clearly eleven inches long?

The Calm Before the Storm

This weekend has, of course, been all about Gustav. "Hurry up and wait" I think is the whole theme. Now that the hurricane has made landfall, it's only a Category 2, which is good news. We might not have to put the battery-operated fan Olivia's mom gave us to use afterall. But, we still haven't even seen a trace of the storm here. So who knows what's in store.
We have managed to get in some good visits with family and friends as we wait. Olivia's mom came into town Friday and stayed through Sunday. She had planned to continue her journey south to Lucedale, where Olivia's grandmother lives. But, the whole contraflow messed up that plan. Lucy, Lauchlin's sister, brought May and Ellen over Sunday morning to visit. Those two gave a glimpse of hurricane force winds and the damage they can do. Not really. They were great!
We also had a sort of pre-hurricane party with our old friends Cortney and Fico at Tom and Emily's new house they're renovating (completely by themselves). The Linares Family actually had been planning for weeks to make the trip north from their home in New Orleans (well, really, Kenner). Little did they know then that most of the rest of their state would be coming as well. But, it was great seeing them. And, depending on how it goes, we might get to squeeze in another visit!
Here are some highlights from the weekend...
While Olivia and her mom were out collecting hurricane supplies, they spotted this vehicle with Louisiana tags. Our best guess is that the green in the center is an aligator tail. I guess if you are forced to evacuate, why not do it in style, right?

When we arrived Sunday afternoon to Tom and Emily's new house that they've been working on constantly since the very beginning of summer, this is what the kitchen looked like.

And, after some work...
They had two beautiful cabinets up. Emily was pretty pleased.
The cabinet-maker himself.

We didn't do any of the work, but we took Maria up on the offer of sharing her margarita when we dined at Sol Azteca (we only went because it's the closest to Bovina. It's by far the worst Mexican in Vicksburg!)

Mojo decided Sunday that she's ready to hit the road instead of waiting this thing out.
